It is (like golf) a sickness. I have promised, promised in writing, that I will stop with the questions, but I can't, so:
Doesn't anyone realize that the word "swagger"denotes a bad thing, not a good thing? Do you believe that the 10-second rule should be followed religiously, or should one be able to eat an m&m no matter how long it has been on the floor?
Is there a twelve-step program for questionaholics?

Jack Thanks for pointing out the wastefulness. We can multiply this example by hundreds of others who "tie symbolic damsels to the railroad tracks." The salvation, in the song at least, " . . . and then, along came Jones." Jones in this case is the voter who is disgusted enough to vote the bas..... out of office. Let's hope.

Great story and great memories. Here's another. A few years ago (in the '40s) I was watching my grandfather shave with a straight razor, same ritual you described, and I asked when I could try. I had no beard, but why worry over details? He told me to wait and later that day he was painting the garage door and doing the trim around the windows. He took the brush in his left hand (he was right handed) and made perfect strokes, leaving no paint on the glass. He told me when I was able to paint with my left hand without getting paint on the glass, I could try a straight razor. Fortunately, by the time I had whiskers, there were electric razors. I never bothered to try the painting drill.

You are right on about the Audi. The independent investigation cost millions, but it had to be done, because no one would believe the Government if they conducted the investigation. The final conclusion of the blue ribbon panel (which included one of the brothers from Car Talk) was "pedal misapplication." These drivers were pushing on the gas pedal rather than the brake. In fact, one guy testified that the harder he pushed on the brake, the faster the car went. Hello out there. Is anybody home?

This sounds a lot like the Audi assasination that CBS and the Center for Auto Safety cooked up 20 years ago. It devastated resale values of the car as well as new car sales. But after extensive testing by third party analysts, they never once were able to replicate the "unintended acceleration" that generated countless lawsuits. That, of course, doesn't really generate TV viewers, so CBS was able to move on to its next greate expose, never acknowledging the final U.S. findings. According to a Wall Street Journal article at the time (12/18/1989) Audi by then was defending itself against claims that totaled $5 billion. The quest for the free lunch is endless. You are right to be skeptical.
